Why Build Your Own Aquarium?

You could save some cash, have it tailor made for the space in which you plan to install a tank, and count yourself proud.

Materials You’ll  Need

Cut glass panels Aquarium-safe silicone Masking tape Acetone or rubbing alcohol Clamps, Razor blade, Tape Measure, safety gear

Plan Your Tank

Decide the size and shape. Nano aquarium — 20 gallons and under Medium tanks- 20–40 gallon sizes Large tank — over 40 gallons

Clean the Glass

Cleaning up the edges of your glass after they are cut with acetone or alcohol to remove dust, and oils so that the silicone properly bonds.

Apply Silicone

Apply silicone along the edges of the base panel. Attach the side panels, front and back. Reinforce all edges with additional silicone to ensure a waterproof seal.

Let it Cure

Then let the silicone cure, finish building it (put doors on where you want them), add filters, etc and run in the first use for 24 - 48 hours without moving.

Clean & Test

Scrape away the excess silicone with a razor blade. Top off the tank halfway and check for leaks. If you discover any,

After the tank is capable of holding water without  any leaks,

Add in your substrate followed by whatever decor or plants you wish to place there and finally plug in your filter.
